The aim of creative recycling is to produce useful, practical and decorative artefacts from recycled materials and discarded objects. It is important for the products to retain the character of the original source materials and not become bland and anonymous, for example the wood that I use from demolished buildings can contain nail holes , nails themselves and other blemishes depending upon its condition when recovered. Most materiels in common usage can be recycled ,but wood and metal are particularly suitable, because of their strong and distinct original character. However cardboard and plastics also have potential. The sources of materials vary, , demolition sites ,skips etc are very good and sometimes clients supply their own materials for commissions, for example the large table shown was deigned and made from wood reclaimed from a demolished church. Some of the small circular boxes are made from sections of cast iron drainpipe reclaimed from a 19th century house. I try to use as much recycled material as possible in my designs, this means the material has been used for at least once for another purpose, for example wood will have been used for construction or furniture etc .Elements such as clock mechanisms and furniture hardware are new, finishing materials and adhesives likewise.
